5500 Hectares Of High-Density Plantation To Come Up In JK

SRINAGAR: The Administrative Council under the chairmanship of Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha approved the implementation of a high-density plantation scheme in the horticulture sector with the support of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED). The step will go a long way in enhancing the quality and quantity of horticulture produce and doubling the farmer’s income. The farmer-centric scheme will be implemented for apple, walnut, almond, cherry, litchi, and olive among others over an estimated area of 5500 hectares of suitable agro-climatic zones for 6 years with effect from March 2021 to March 2026. The new high-density plantation scheme has provisions to provide 50% subsidy to orchardists for the establishment of high-density orchards accompanied by a loan facility for raising 40% of remaining capital. More than 22000 free and cashless treatments have taken place under the SEHAT scheme Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) till February 2021. The scheme launched in December 2020 aims to provide Universal Health Insurance Coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family on a floater basis in convergence with central government’s Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). So far, more than 30 lakh residents of Jammu and Kashmir have registered under the scheme, covering about 56 per cent of the families. Under the scheme, in the first two months, 22.05 lakh Golden Cards were issued to eligible beneficiaries in addition to 13.28 lakh Golden Cards that were already in circulation issued under AB PM-JAY. Under AB PM-JAY, about 70 per cent of the eligible families have been registered. KL Image by Bilal Bahadur When Jammu and Kashmir administration signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) in January 2020, it was expected to promote the state’s horticulture produce and take it to the global market. A year later, the NAFED has done little to help the apple farmers. On the contrary, it has shaken up the already smooth and profitably functioning decades-old setup of the Rs 9000 crore worth horticulture industry. The entry of duty-free Iranian apples through the Afghanistan route has only further detracted from the profitability of the apple.

Horticulture Mineral Oil Cheaper In Himachal Than Kashmir, Growers Ask Why SRINAGAR: Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union on Thursday said that there is a heavy rate difference of Rs. 10/- to 15/- per litre of the cost of mineral oil between Kashmir and Himachal. In a statement, the union said that since there is not too route distance from Himachal to Kashmir Valley, the charging of excessive freight rate of Rs. 10/- to 15/- per litre is not, therefore, justified. “About 1 Lac kilo litres approximately of mineral Oil are used by the Fruit Growers of the Valley in their fruit orchards, the difference of Rs. 10/- to 15/- per litre will, therefore, cause heavy losses when the Valley Based Fruit Growers/Dealers are facing constantly losses since last several years due to one or the other reason,” said Kashmir Valley Fruit Growers Cum Dealers Union in a statement.
