Women s Weekend Watch: NCAA First & Second Round Preview, Part I

Thursday May 13th, 2021 10:00am (Photo Courtesy: Dave Anderson)  We made it! After months of wondering whether the 2021 season would even happen, the powers that be figured it out. The student-athletes and coaches stayed as safe and healthy as possible under unprecedented circumstances (can we retire that phrase soon?). And now, we’ve arrived at May Madness.  Choosing the 29-team field involved some unprecedented (sorry) discussions. The Big Ten only played conference opponents. Some teams played 11 or 12 games while others got in 16 or more. And the bracket isn’t without controversy (Duke at No. 7? No Penn State?). But that’s all pundit-speak. Over the next three weekends, teams will settle scores between the lines. Here’s (half of) what to watch for this weekend.

Drexel Advances to First CAA Women s Championship Game

Fri May 7 2021 | Brian Logue | College PHOTO BY KEVIN P. TUCKER Drexel came from behind to beat Towson 15-14 in overtime and is headed to the CAA final for the first time in program history. Drexel’s magical season continues on following a 15-14 comeback victory in overtime against Towson in the Colonial Athletic Association women’s lacrosse semifinals on Friday evening in Harrisonburg, Va. Senior attacker Courtney Dietzel scored off a free-position attempt in the opening possession of overtime to give the Dragons (13-1) the victory. Drexel, which beat Towson by double digits twice in the last month, trailed by three goals with under 10 minutes to play. But then Drexel ripped off three goals in a span of just 60 seconds Colleen Grady (7:46), Jamie Schneidereith (7:06) and Karson Harris (6:46) to tie the game 14-14.

Women s Weekend Watch: Hardware, AQs Up for Grabs as Selection Sunday Nears

Thursday May 6th, 2021 9:00am (Inside Lacrosse Photo: Phil Armato)  In a season full of surprises, a pair of favorites punched their tickets to the NCAA Tournament last weekend, with UNC winning the ACC and Northwestern taking the Big Ten crown. Outside of the Power Five, High Point secured its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament automatic qualifier by winning the Big South.  But don’t use a pen if you’re trying Bracketology at home. There’s still plenty up in the air. St. Joe s shook things up by downing nationally-ranked Richmond in the A-10 semis last weekend, opening the door for UMass to earn its bid to the tournament and leaving the Spiders to sweat it out, hoping for an at-large bid on Sunday.

Women s Weekend Watch: 5 Dark Horses to Keep an Eye On

Friday April 23rd, 2021 1:30pm (Photo Courtesy: Glen Mitchell, StanfordPhoto.com)  No. 1 North Carolina and No. 2 Northwestern have played a cut above the rest of the field this year. The rest of Division I lacrosse is up for grabs, with multiple teams in the sport’s traditional powerhouse conferences, the ACC and Big Ten, jockeying for positioning in the standings.  Last week, Boston College topped a Notre Dame team that took UNC to the brink. The Eagles will close the season at Syracuse in what could be the matchup of the weekend. In the Big Ten, Rutgers upset Maryland, and Johns Hopkins topped Penn State.
