LA GRANDE â The opportunity to return home proved too much for The Observer editor Phil Wright to ignore.
Wright is returning to Pendleton to take over as news editor at the East Oregonian, beginning Monday, May 24. Wright replaces Wyatt Haupt, who left to become editor of The Daily World, in Aberdeen, Washington.
âI was not expecting this opportunity, so when it came my way I was surprised, sure,â Wright said. âBut then I gave it careful scrutiny over a couple weeks. While Iâm returning to the EO, the coronavirus pandemic has reshaped the newsroom I left. This really is a new challenge for me.â
I was not expecting to write this column this soon.
After a bit more than 18 months as editor of The Observer, Iâm returning from where I came â the East Oregonian â to be the news editor.
My stay here has been something of a blur â settling in during winter 2019-20, ready to get to know La Grande and Union County as the coronavirus hit, then changeover in our newsroom since November 2020. And just as we are at full staff and beginning to see the fruits of that, Iâm heading out the door.
Yeah, itâs a selfish move. But it is one I really didnât imagine myself doing. And then, I never quite imagined myself as an editor during most of my career as a reporter.
