The PM Modi-led BJP govt has launched 74 additional airports in the last 9 years, similar to the number of airports operational before 2014, taking the total number of airports to 148 in India.
The newly-constructed airport that has a lotus-shaped terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi on February 27 ahead of the May Assembly elections in Karnataka. According to Minister of Civil Aviation Shri Jyotiraditya M Scindia, the Shivamogga airport is designed like a lotus flower, and is suitable for A-320-type aircraft. Operations at the airport will commence on August 11 if all goes according to plan. A flight from Bengaluru will be the first to land at the airport on that day, Patil added.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has permitted the Karnataka State Industries and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC) to conduct the operation and maintenance of the Shivamogga airport.
