The Karnataka High Court had in March last year upheld the ban imposed by the then BJP government, stating that wearing a hijab was not an essential religious practice of Islam.
Petitions challenging the Karnataka hijab ban led to a split verdict in the Supreme Court today. Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the petitions against the hijab ban, while Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed them.
The Karnataka High Court bench, headed by Chief Justice Ritu Raj Awasthi, is slated to pronounce the judgement on the ban imposed on students wearing Hijab today i.e. March 15 Tuesday.
