Zoom has announced that it’s acquiring a company known as Kites (short for Karlsruhe Information Technology Solutions), which has worked on creating real-time translation and transcription software. Zoom says the acquisition is a move to help it make communicating with people who speak different languages easier, and that it’s looking to add translation capabilities to its video conferencing app.
According to its site, Kites began at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and its technology was originally developed to act as in-classroom translation for students who needed help understanding the English or German their professors were lecturing in.

Video conferencing platform vendor Zoom has acquired German start-up Karlsruhe Information Technology Solutions – known as Kites – in a bid to imbue its offering with real-time language translation capabilities.
Founded in 2015 by Alex Waibel and Sebastian Stüker – both faculty members at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – Kites specialises in artificial intelligence (AI) speech translation. The commercial application of the Kites real-time translation platform has, until now, been largely used for academic lecture and government purposes.

Microsoft’s Skype used to be the go-to platform for video calling, but these days, Zoom seems to be a more popular choice. However, there are certain features of Skype that make it slightly more advantageous than Zoom, such as real-time translations, but that is expected to change as well.

This is because Zoom has recently announced their plans to acquire a company called Karlsruhe Information Technology Solutions, also known as Kites. This is a company that specializes in real-time translations that relies on machine learning, which means that there is a very good chance that this could be a feature in a future Zoom update.
