2021 is finally here. I know I m not alone in being excited to welcome a new year, not because I think the world will miraculously be fixed overnight, but because new year means a chance at a fresh start, and I m all for that.

Then in May and June, books on anti-racist reading lists surged as a response to the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. The former President, in a Twitter post Thursday, highlighted 17 titles including Isabel Wilkerson s Caste, Brit Bennett s The Vanishing Half and C Pam Zhang s How Much of These Hills is Gold. But noticeably absent from the list was his own memoir A Promised Land which was released last month. I ll start by sharing my favourite books this year, deliberately omitting what I think is a pretty good book A Promised Land by a certain 44th president, Obama joked.
