Janesville shooting suspect to go on trial in October

March 11, 2021 The suspect in a Janesville shooting last summer will go on trial in October. 18-year-old Kenan Clemons pleaded not guilty Thursday to attempted first-degree intentional homicide and three other charges stemming from the June incident. Clemons is accused of stealing a bicycle from a man’s garage and later shooting him and fleeing in his vehicle. The victim told the court the ongoing prosecution has been hard on him and his family, and he wants to see it resolved as soon as possible. Rock County Judge Karl Hanson said the trial will be the No. 1 case in his court, and the two sides will schedule jury dates for next October.

Rock County Court finished 31% fewer criminal cases in 2020

JANESVILLE State data shows that Rock County Court officials wrapped up 31% fewer criminal cases in 2020 than in 2019, quantifying one way that COVID-19 brought the court system to what one judge called “almost a screeching halt.” Rock County, like the state and country, had to radically alter daily life as the coronavirus spread. Since last March, Rock County Court has held most—if not all, at some points—of its hearings virtually over Zoom. The pivot to virtual hearings is one of a few explanations local judges gave for getting through fewer cases. “We had to basically reinvent an entire court system with the use of technology,” Judge John Wood told The Gazette late last week.

Lake, Missaukee, Osceola and Wexford counties enacting weight restrictions next week

The start of the new work week also will mean the beginning of seasonal weight restrictions in the Cadillac area. On Monday, Lake County will put the restrictions in place beginning at 6 a.m. with Missaukee, Osceola and Wexford counties putting weight restrictions in place on Tuesday. In Missaukee and Wexford counties, they will start at 6 a.m., while Osceola will start the restrictions at 7 a.m. Once in place, the restrictions will remain in place until further notice in all four counties. Last year, all four counties put restrictions on local roads on March 2, while in 2019, all four counties enacted weight restrictions on March 13.
