This discussion has for the most part taken place at the macro political and philosophical level, pretty much informed by the founding principle of equality stated in the Declaration of Independence, the historical stains of slavery, Jim Crow and segregation, the Emma Lazarus poem on the base of the Statue of Liberty about accepting the “huddled masses,” the rise of the women’s movement and Black Lives Matter, and our obvious failures to live up to the principles of American exceptionalism.
