يتنافس في بغداد نحو 1000 مرشح للانتخابات التشريعية المقبلة، ضمن 17 دائرة انتخابية مقسمة بين جانبي الكرخ والرصافة. ويبلغ عدد مقاعد العاصمة 71 مقعدا، فيما بلغ عدد الكتل والاحزاب المتنافسة نحو 200 تيار، اكثر من نصفهم قوائم فردية. قوائم المرشحين تظهر غياب اكثر من 40 نائبا حاليا عن المنافسة، وثلاثة رؤساء حكومات فازوا في الدورة السابقة عن بغداد، ابرزهم حيدر العبادي.
وقرر نحو 30 نائبا عن العاصمة اعادة ترشيح انفسهم، و20 مسؤولا محليا سابقا، مقابل وزير حالي واثنين سابقين احدهما كان قريبا من رئاسة الحكومة.
