UP Expanding Chicago Intermodal Terminal Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor Once fully operational, UP’s new grain transload facility, collocated at Global IV in Joliet, Ill., will have the capacity to process 50,000 containers per year. Union Pacific (UP) began construction this month on a grain transload facility collocated at the Global IV terminal in Joliet, Ill., to increase ag shipper connections to empty containers and the railroad’s West Coast port terminal network. The Transload is slated for completion by fourth-quarter 2021, and once fully operational, will have the capacity to process 50,000 containers per year, according to UP. Midwest agricultural producers and processors will be able to truck their product to Global IV for transloading into intermodal containers, which will then move by rail to the ports and by ship to overseas markets.
