Universities call on EU not to restrict Horizon access

Universities call on EU not to restrict Horizon access Research-intensive university groups representing 77 universities across Europe have signed a joint statement urging the European Union not to restrict access for associated countries, such as the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Israel, to parts of its multi-billion Horizon Europe research programme, including those covering space and quantum projects. The joint statement is signed by the Russell Group, the German U15, UDICE French Research Universities, the League of European Research Universities (LERU) and the Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities (the Guild). Professor Kurt Deketelaere, secretary-general of LERU, said: “If the European Union wants to strengthen its global competitive position, cooperation with strong and reliable research partners is key.

Special diets might boost the power of drugs to vanquish cancers

Apr. 1, 2021 , 10:10 AM When New York City medical oncologist Vicky Makker meets a patient with endometrial cancer that has spread or recurred, she knows the outlook isn’t good. Even after radiation and drug treatments, most women with advanced disease die within 5 years. But this spring, Makker is helping launch two clinical trials she hopes will change the picture. The drug patients will receive, called a phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, has already failed in multiple cancer trials. But the new studies are taking an unconventional tack to resurrect the drug: putting patients on a ketogenic diet, a low-carbohydrate regimen that typically involves loads of meat, cheese, eggs, and vegetables. The researchers hope the diet will render tumors more vulnerable to the drug, which blocks a growth-promoting pathway in cells. “It’s very outside of the mainstream thinking,” says Makker, a researcher at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Study reveals new way to target cancer s nutritional needs

Study reveals new way to target cancer’s nutritional needs Jan 18 2021 Scientists discover a way to target cancer’s nutritional needs, which could lead to a new way to treat the disease, according to a study published in Nature Communications today (Thursday). Numerous studies in mice and cancer cells have shown cancer growth can be reduced in response to diets lacking serine. But results have been variable because some cancer cells are efficient in making their own serine, particularly those with a KRAS mutation which is found in several hard-to-treat cancers. The scientists in today’s study, funded by Cancer Research UK, found that restricting the amount of serine in the diet of mice when given alongside a drug that prevents the body from making it, reduced tumor cell growth in several different models of bowel cancer.
