the best of the worst is tonight s sign of the times. announcer: from the global resources of abc news, with terry moran, martin bashir and cynthia mcfadden in new york city this is nightline, july 27th, 2010. good evening, i m terry moran. and we re going to begin tonight with a murder investigation that s leading authorities down a dark path. the suspect, 27-year-old jason thomas scott, a college graduate, studying for a masters degree. maryland police say he is also a killer, whose victims include two pairs of mothers and daughters. scott, they say, studied police forens forensics, to learn how to hide his crimes. and the data base from his job at ups, to identify potential targets. pierre thomas has the story on a cerebral serial killer suspect. reporter: the horror began on january 26th 2009, as an intruder slipped in. karen lofton, a 45-year-old nurse, was fatally shot as he tried to hide in this corner. her 16-year-old daughter was repeatedly shot as he frant
the house tonight voted to give the president his $33 billion to fund the war for a year, but a stunning number of democrats, his own party, broke to vote against him, sending a seismic statement about what is to come. and all of this is a day after that 92,000-document leak about the troubled history of the fight. jonathan karl was there for it all today on capitol hill. jon? reporter: diane, more than 100 democrats in the house voted against the war funding bill, revealing a growing democratic revolt against the president s policy in afghanistan. democrat after democrat came forward, not just to the war but to cut off funding for it. wake up, america. the wikileak documents gave us 92,000 reasons to end the war. it is wrong to be borrowing money from china, laying off american police officers to train police officers in afghanistan. the costs of this war are too enormous in blood and treasure. reporter: last year, when the house voted on war funding, 32 democrats

murders. these court documents show he has a criminal history as long as your arm. police won t say his name until a grand jury charges him and we have a list of lawyers as long as your arm saying we can t name it either. the ups war house where he worked inlandover was also where the fed s say he met customers to sell stolen weapons out of the trunk of his car. one of those customers was a paid informant who recorded the sale of weapons like an ar15 and ak47 here last year. police describe him as a person of interest in the killings of karen lofton and her daughter in january of last year and delores dwitt and her daughter two months later. he lived with his parents within about two miles of both sets of victims and was known in his neighborhood as a brainiac and as someone accused of breaking into this womans home. it s just scary though, you know? it is scary. court documents show him to have a violent past including armed home invasions with a fellow ups employee an
