IT is often in times of crisis that the community pulls together and showcases the very best of a local area. This was definitely the case at the very start of the coronavirus pandemic in Carlisle last March as the country braced for measures to combat the virus. “Rumours started to swirl about the UK going into full lockdown,” explained Lisa Brown, founder of Carlisle Covid-19 Community Help, part of Carlisle Community Help. “I started to think about everyone getting stuck almost, a lot of people stood around and they didn’t know what to do. “Everyone couldn’t go out and no one knew what that meant. Me, Colin (Glover) and Karen (Lockney) set up a group on Facebook advertising a number that people could call for help.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, local heroes have emerged to undertake acts of selflessness and kindness. Andy Whitaker is the founder and director of Highly Strung, Cumbria’s most successful wedding band. And as a result of the pandemic, the group lost at least two years of business after all of their wedding bookings were postponed. However, after deciding that he did not want to let the experience get the better of him, Andy vowed to give his time to volunteering to one of Carlisle’s most essential good causes – the Affordable Food Hub. Andy has been a dedicated volunteer throughout the Covid crisis and is using the time freed up in his life to help others who are struggling during the pandemic.
