Six months after explosion, Lebanon’s health care sector on verge of collapse

The number of COVID-19 deaths has increased by 50 times since the Beirut port explosion compared to the total number of deaths recorded in the first six months of the pandemic. These numbers should be a wake-up call for the country’s leaders to invest in public health if they want to avert future health crises, says Project HOPE.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed major deficiencies within the health care sector in Lebanon,” says Rabih Torbay, CEO and President of Project HOPE. “By not investing in its public health system, Lebanon is struggling to meet the demands and needs of the population during a pandemic, and as a result, lives are lost every day.”

NNA - Deputy Prime Minister - Caretaker Minister of Defense, Zeina Akar, as well as Caretaker Minister of Public Health, Hamad Hassan, on Monday visited Karantina Governmental Hospital , which has been destroyed by Beirut Port explosion, to seek the best means to rebuild it with the support of the State of Qatar.
The inspection visit took place in the presence of Qatari Chargé d Affairs, Ali Al-Motawa, and Qatari Consul, Ali Al-Athba.
After a tour in the premises of the damaged hospital, Minister Akar said that the Qatari donation, with which plans have been made to demolish the Karantina Hospital building and rebuild it agai
