WASHINGTON: The Navy reported on Thursday [May 6] the US destroyer “Hanson” collided with a Russian tug late Wednesday night in the Korea Strait 80 miles from the Japanese Coast. In a statement issued at the Pentagon, the Navy said the vessels suffered today minor damage and that no crewmen were injured. The Soviet vessel was identified as the tug “Diomid”.
The Hanson sustained six-foot dent on the [starboard] bow. This was the fifth such incident in waters off Korea since 1966 involving a US warship and a Russian vessel. The last collision occurred on Jan 31, 1968, when the destroyer “Rowan” and the Soviet merchant ship “Kapitan Vislobokov” collided 95 miles east of Pohang, South Korea.
