New York City Mayor announces aid for India's Covid-19 response

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has announced plans to tap into the city s stockpile to send COVID-19 test kits, swabs, ventilators, pulse oximeters and other vital medical supplies to India to save lives and beat back the pandemic. His announcement on Friday came as India recorded 3,26,098 fresh COVID-19 cases that took the national tally to 2,43,72,907, while 3,890 new fatalities pushed the death toll to 2,66,207. In a statement posted on the official website of the City of New York, de Blasio said that just over a year ago, New York City was the center of the global pandemic. Now it is our turn to step up and help India in its moment of crisis. We are sending vital medical equipment to India to send a clear message: nobody is in the fight against COVID-19 alone. Together, we can save lives and beat back the pandemic, the mayor said.

SHARE: As counsel to New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Kapil Longani and his staff tackle significant legal issues that come across the mayor’s desk. During the coronavirus pandemic that meant coming up with creative solutions to help ameliorate the impact of COVID-19 on the city. Longani spoke with City & State about his upbringing, what influenced his legal career and how his job changed during the pandemic. This interview has been edited for length and clarity. Please talk about your background, your influences and how you ended up in the mayor’s office. I was born in India, a long way from here in a village just south of New Delhi, the capitol. I came here when I was fairly young, about 6 months old. My parents’ marriage was arranged. They knew each other for about three hours before they got married. Date Time Kapil Longani ’97: shaping NYC’s COVID-19 response Since 2018, Kapil Longani ’97 has served as chief counsel to New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio. Since the start of the pandemic, Longani has helped shape the city’s plans for reopening schools, creating outdoor dining protocols, and thinking through legal issues around COVID testing and vaccine distribution. “Every significant or sensitive legal issue that comes before the mayor stops at my desk first,” Longani says. “I like to consider myself his solutions person, his solutions czar.” In the spring of 2020, New York City became the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic. Longani’s office of 15 staff members has drafted each of the more than 90 executive orders governing the city’s response to COVID-19. His team has worked 24/7 since the pandemic hit, and has navigated sensitive legal issues nobody could ever have imagined, Longani says.
