Kao Ly Ilean Her, Hmong leader and UMN regent, dies at 52 Josh Verges © Provided by Twin Cities Pioneer Press University of Minnesota Regent Kao Ly Ilean Her, of Maplewood, was elected to the Board of Regents of the University of Minnesota in 2019. Her is the chief executive officer of the Hmong Elders Center, an adult day center serving Hmong seniors in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Previously, she worked in a variety of organizations in government, nonprofit, and philanthropic sectors, including service as executive director of the State of Minnesota Council on Asian-Pacific Minnesotans. University of Minnesota Regent Kao Ly Ilean Her dies at 52 Advocate recently had contracted COVID-19.  May 14, 2021 12:56pm Text size Copy shortlink: Kao Ly Ilean Her, the University of Minnesota s first Hmong regent and a passionate advocate for the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, died Thursday. She was 52. Her had been hospitalized for the past few weeks. She had a chronic lung disease and recently contracted COVID-19, said her sister Sharon Her Edgens. Her was elected to a six-year term on the U s governing board in 2019. She previously served as executive director of the state Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans for more than 15 years.
