Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta gave his final address on a national holiday as the country marked 59 years of self-rule after colonialism on 1 June 2022. For the first time, Madaraka Day was observed at Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens, historic for the lowering of the Union Jack and the hoisting of the first Kenyan flag in 1963.
