Voting begins in West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry for the legislative assembly elections on Tuesday.
The voting has begun in four states and one union territory for the legislative assembly elections on Tuesday. More than 20 crore people from West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Puducherry will cast their vote at 7 am on April 6.
Polling began at 7 am on Tuesday for 31 seats in the third phase of the West Bengal assembly elections amid tight security, officials said. Voting is underway with strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols in 16 seats in South 24 Parganas district (part II), seven in Howrah (part I) and eight in Hooghly (part I), they said. Long queues were seen outside polling stations, where voting will continue till 6.30 pm. Over 78.5 lakh voters are eligible to exercise their franchise to decide the fate of 205 candidates, including BJP leader Swapan Dasgupta, state minister Ashima Patra and CPI(M) leader Kanti Ganguly. The Election Commission has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC in all the constituencies, declaring them as sensitive .

Kolkata, April 6 : Amid sporadic violence, brisk voting was recorded on Tuesday in the third phase poll in 31 Assembly constituencies spread across three districts South 24 parganas, Hooghly and Howrah.
According to Election Commission data, 14.62 per cent polling was recorded in the first three hours of polling much on the lines of phase-1 and phase-2 polls held on March 27 and April 1 respectively.
There were reports of violence from Goghat in Hooghly where BJP alleged that a mother of a BJP worker was killed by the Trinamool goons last night. Similarly, Trinamool Congress alleged that people were not being allowed to vote in different booths of Sasta, Dagira, Babuldanga and Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas.
