Prairie Hills Middle School students learn about beekeeping firsthand

Gabe Salazar enjoys watching bees. He and his family are thinking of raising the insect at home. So when Gabe, a seventh grader at Prairie Hills Middle School in Hutchinson, heard about the bee club at school, he was on board. So were eight other middle school students at this Buhler School District middle school. Three years ago, Victor Wilkinson and Shelly Brooks, the seventh and eighth grade science teachers, visited the Kansas State Fair and became interested in bees. They spoke to local beekeepers and brought in speakers. Soon they applied for a grant from the Kansas Honey Producers Association.
