The bone of contention is alleged deficiencies in COVID management by the civic bodies. The LDF is organising protests on Tuesday at 250 centres in Kannur Corporation, 21 centres in Kadampur, 15 centres in Valapattanam, and 17 centres in Ayyankunnu. CPI(M) district secretary M.V. Jayarajan said that the LDF had decided to organise the protest demanding opening of community kitchens, provision of essential services to guest workers and in-patients, delivery of essential items, including medicines, to the public through home delivery, and ending the alleged discrimination in the issuance of passes and taking

K Sneha: Trans election candidate dies by suicide in India

A transgender woman who had fought for representation by running in local elections in India has died by suicide in front of her house. Warning – descriptions of suicide.  K Sneha stood as an independent candidate for ward number 36 of local body the Kannur Municipal Corporation, attracting widespread media attention as the sole trans candidate. She was a social activist who spoke loudly for the advancement of trans rights in India. Sneha also fought for better living conditions and for improvements to the infrastructure of her community. According to reports, Sneha died on Tuesday night (9 February). Police said the primary investigation concluded Sneha’s death as a suicide, and more details would be revealed after further investigation. 

T O Mohanan elected Kannur Mayor

Mohan Congress rebel also supports UDF nominee United Democratic Front (UDF) nominee T.O. Mohanan was elected Mayor of the Kannur Municipal Corporation on Monday. The election was conducted at the corporation hall in the presence of District Collector T.V. Subhash. The Collector later administered the oath of office to Mr. Mohanan. Mr. Mohanan defeated N. Sukanya of the Left Democratic Front by bagging 33 votes. Congress rebel K. Sureshan, who won from the Kannathur division, also supported Mr. Mohanan. Ms. Sukanya got 19 votes.

T O Mohanan to be Kannur Mayor

Adv. T.O. Mohanan will be the new Mayor of the Kannur Municipal Corporation. Mr. Mohanan was chosen for the post after winning 11 votes as compared to his contender and former Deputy Mayor P.K. Ragesh, who got nine votes. Another contender, KPCC general secretary Martin George, opted out of the race. Mr. Mohanan is a member of the KPCC executive committee. He began his political career through the KSU 34 years ago. He was chairman of the welfare standing committee of the Kannur Urban Council and chief of the public works standing committee in the Kannur Corporation.
