Five soldiers were killed by Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, in an ambush on a military convoy in Borno State, weekend.
ISWAP split from the mainstream Boko Haram six years ago and rose to become a dominant group.
This came as no fewer than 35 people were kidnapped on Friday, also by ISWAP militants at a fake checkpoint in Garin Kuturu village outside Jakana, 25 kilometres from Maiduguri, Borno State.

My name is Ibrahim Hamzat. I am 25 years old. I am an undergraduate. My brother’s name is Umar Usman. He is 15 years old.
Can your brother speak about his experience when bandits invaded his school in Katsina?
No, he is not available because he was sick even before the incident happened. My uncle took him to Abuja for medical attention. He has typhoid and malaria. The incident happened on Friday night, December 11 and I had been to the school myself on Tuesday evening. I had gone there to give him some drugs for malaria and typhoid.
