While the Accra Criminal Court ‘5’ was advising complainant Prince Owusu Amankwah to take steps to recover his money for being reckless, it also handed down a six year jail term to the second accused person, Edward Kotey (trader), alias Niiquaye, for fraud related offences.
The court, presided over by Justice Mrs Lydia Osei Marfo also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of the first accused person, one Kofi Owusu Hayford (prisoner), who is currently on the run.
The court’s decision was rooted in the fact that Mr Amankwah, who lives at Labadi and works with Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), failed to do proper checks on Toyota RAV 4, 2010 model, displayed on Tonaton.com before paying an amount of GH₵50,000 to the sellers.
Five policemen have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from drivers, the Accra Regional Police Command has confirmed. They have since been detained. They are said to have extorted GHC20,000 and GHC18,000 respectively from two drivers.
The said policemen were on patrol duties in some parts of Accra when they allegedly stopped and extorted the money from the drivers. The police men who were armed reportedly threatened the complainant drivers and in one case even reportedly handcuffed their victim.
Their names were given as Wishwell Odoo, Evans Arawassi, Lawal Agyapong and Senate Kuvordo, who are all constables. The fifth person is Lance Corporal Redeemer Agama.
