A state mask mandate for schools is still in effect, but in southern Utah a flood of exemptions means about a third of all students in the Kane County School District are able to go mask-free.
Just a couple of weeks ago, maybe a dozen students had exemptions. Now, roughly 475 do out of 1,417 students in the entire district.
A local change announced by the Kane district on April 13 allowed parents to submit exemptions for their children rather than medical professionals and mask-free forms flowed to educators.
“Kane School District currently has received medical mask exemptions for approximately 34% of our students,” said superintendent Ben Dalton, in response to questions from 2News, adding the same is the case “for approximately 30% of our faculty and staff.”
