Dunmore's War: History events tell story of WV conflict | Recreation

A series of events at West Virginia state parks and historical sites will revisit the significance of Dunmore s War, a struggle that took place in 1774 between Virginia militiamen and Native American tribes of the Ohio River Valley in what is now West Virginia, setting the stage for Revolutionary War struggles on the western frontier. The events will include living history interpreter Doug Wood, who will portray Thomas Ingles, the son of Mary Draper Ingles, who, at age 4, was abducted with his mother by the Shawnee in 1755 at Draper s Meadows, Virginia.

South Charleston library closed for repairs after storm | Kanawha Valley

About a third of the roof of the South Charleston Public Library in South Charleston, West Virginia was blown off during last week’s storms, but City Manager Rick Atkinson is hopeful the repairs will be finished by the end of April. The wind destroyed the roof of the library’s western wing. While staff was able to quickly cover bookshelves with tarp and plastic, about 4% of the library’s adult collection was damaged from rain. The 1,269 books will be replaced, however.

Charleston: Community MLK painting donated to library | Kanawha Valley

A piece of art made by the community was given back to the community Monday, March 25, 2024, at the main branch of the Kanawha County Public Library. During the January Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration at Charleston’s Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, community members helped paint a mural of King surrounded by women. The painting, finished by local artist Ian Bode, is displayed on the library s third floor. The piece, sponsored by the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation, was facilitated by the Charleston-Institute Chapter of The Links, a service organization made up of Black women.
