Flood situation in Johor continues to improve

4:06 PM MYT JOHOR BARU: The flood situation in the state has continued to improve as the number of victims placed at temporary relief centres (PPS) has continued to drop. Johor health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said that as of 4pm, Wednesday (Jan 6), there were 3,182 people from 807 families placed at PPS compared to 3,566 people from 903 families at 8am on the same day. “Six PPS have also been closed down, leaving only 26 that are still in operation for the six districts that are affected by the flood. “The highest numbers of victims are from Kota Tinggi with 1,793 people followed by Kluang with 858 people, Mersing (307), Segamat (89), Johor Baru (72) and Batu Pahat (63), ” he said in a statement here.

JOHOR BARU: Continuous heavy rain since New Year’s Day in Johor has forced some 1,800 people to seek shelter at 28 temporary relief centres in four districts. Kampung Sepakat Baru villager Mohd Sarip Darsan, 82, said it saddened him to see his food supplies being washed away by floodwaters. “It was around 9am. My wife was busy preparing breakfast when floodwaters suddenly came gushing in. Luckily, my son was around and took us to a relief centre, ” he said, adding that the water came up to waist level. He has lived in the village for more than 30 years with his wife Sainah Selamat, 82, and found the current floods to be the worst ever.
