KAMPSVILLE Eighty-two year old Larry Sams of Kampsville sits next to his wife, Carol, in a conference room where sun streams in at the OSF Moeller Cancer Center in Alton and declares he feels special and lucky.
Those aren’t the adjectives you would expect to be coming from someone who has lung cancer and who last July finished chemotherapy and immunotherapy for lymphoma.
Sams also has heart complications, so he’s not a candidate for surgery to remove the cancerous tumor on his lung that was discovered when he was treated for his initial cancer diagnosis. But his lung cancer is early-stage, making him an excellent candidate for what is known as Stereotactic Body Radio Therapy (SBRT), a form of targeted radiation that’s now available through investment in the most current technology to treat early stage cancerous tumors.
Kampsville Ferry open again

KAMPSVILLE The Kampsville Ferry has reopened.
The Illinois River crossing on Illinois Route 100, part of the Great River Road, was temporarily closed because of ice. Illinois Department of Transportation officials on Saturday said the ferry is again operating.
“The ice floe has passed Kampsville currently,” transportation officials said. “We have restarted Kampsville Ferry operations. However, be prepared for intermittent closures as significant ice remains upstream.”
Transportation officials said they will continue to monitor the Illinois River between Brussels and Grafton, and will reopen ferry service there when safe to do so.
The ferry carries passengers and vehicles across the Illinois River 24 hours per day unless the river is frozen or the water is unusually high. The boat, operated by the Illinois Department of Transportation, connects Illinois Route 108 from the western bank in Calhoun County to the eastern ban

The Illinois Department of Transportation has closed the Kampsville Ferry on the Illinois River due to ice.
The ferry closed at 5:00 pm Sunday evening. No word on when IDOT expects to reopen the crossing at this time.
Greene County Sheriff’s Office officials say those needing to cross the river can travel to Hardin and cross over into Calhoun County by way of the Joe Page Bridge.
