More testing of homeless population in Kamloops following positive COVID-19 result

Hilke said the testing will provide a good sample to determine if anyone is positive because Pit Stop is the largest weekly gathering in the city of people in need of a meal. Hilke said the last time Interior Health conducted testing at Pit Stop was at the beginning of the pandemic. He said the testing is due to events that transpired last week, when a homeless man tested positive for COVID-19. “They were testing people that came for the Pit Stop meal,” Hilke said. “Some of those folks were housed, I’m sure. Some not. So, it was just up to the individual to decide whether they wanted a test or not. This is great because it’s no simple matter for some people that are not familiar with using the internet, registering that way [to get tested for COVID-19]. I helped a couple people use 811 to get their appointment for a test and it’s quite complex, even over the phone.”

So much loss: Blue Christmas services go virtual during COVID-19 pandemic

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, people would trickle into a dim and quiet Winnipeg church on one of the longest nights of the year to lament their losses by lighting candles, praying together and sometimes writing out their feelings and shredding the paper. Soul Sanctuary is one of many churches across Canada to hold annual Blue Christmas services, sombre and subdued evenings for anyone experiencing grief or sadness around the holidays. On Dec. 21, the winter solstice, Soul Sanctuary is holding a virtual Blue Christmas service, because the pandemic has made it unsafe to gather in person. Like everybody else, we re walking through this and just trying to bring a little bit of light into the tunnel, said lead pastor Gerry Michalski.

The Garratts spent thirty years working in China on humanitarian and social projects until one day they were taken into custody and spent the following two years in a Chinese prison. Blue Christmas services are subdued, low key services for those struggling with grief during the holidays, and this year they re being held online due to the pandemic.
