Government will review mine effluent discharge permit

The proposed Ajax mine site, owned by Polish state-owned company KGHM (80 per cent) and Vancouver-based Abacus Mining and Exploration Corp. (20 per cent), is also the site of the former Afton mine, from which the effluent is now entering Peterson Creek. The organization said the letter from the ministry states the review of the discharge permit “is on our list of projects and we will be getting to it in the new year.” On Nov. 25, Environment Ministry Deputy Minister said permit review will include consultation with Indigenous nations, local governments and stewardship groups such as the Kamloops Area Preservation Association. “We applaud the B.C. government’s positive response to our request.
