THUNDER BAY The Ministry of Natural Resources dispatched water bombers from Newfoundland & Labrador to a forest fire Tuesday afternoon in Oliver Paipoonge.
A ministry spokesperson told TBNewswatch the fire – designated Thunder Bay fire No. 8 – is east of the Kaministiquia River, about seven kilometres southeast of Sistonen s Corner near Sarri Road.
According to data provided online by the MNRF, at 5 p.m. the fire was estimated to have burned 120 hectares.
The spokesperson said that Oliver Paipoonge firefighters responded to the initial call.
Two CL-415 water bombers on loan from Newfoundland were picking up water at Dog Lake.
One helicopter was also assigned to the fire.
THUNDER BAY - A century-old grain elevator on the city’s south side will remain standing, much to the disappointment of nearby property owners.
The Riverside Grain Products structure sits on the banks of the Kaministiquia River and was built more than 100 years ago. Environmental assessments and public information sessions were held in 2017 to prepare the structure for possible demolition.
The property was forfeited to the provincial government in 2018 with possible demolition taking place in 2019, but a spokesperson with Infrastructure Ontario said there are no plans for demolition at this time.
“When the property was forfeited to the province in 2018 (by the city) there was a different process in place,” the spokesperson said.
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) says the amount of 'drawdown' it undertook this spring is less than usual, because of low precipitation throughout the winter.

THUNDER BAY The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks says it is still reviewing an incident at the Resolute pulp and paper mill this month that saw an increase in contaminants released into the Kaministiquia River.
The incident also caused the company to prolong an unscheduled shutdown of the kraft mill until the situation was normalized.
According to the ministry, the company notified it on Feb. 8 that it was experiencing operational issues in the kraft mill s wastewater treatment system.
