In a small but important step toward re-creating community during the COVID-19 pandemic, Florida A&M University students are pairing as one-on-one mentors with Oak Ridge Elementary School students.
Eight FAMU students from the school s Living Learning Community in the College of Education are beginning to work with Oak Ridge students virtually in the coming weeks.
The initiative has barely begun, but already administrators have high hopes of expanding to other schools in the district, FAMU s Ameenah Shakir said. Shakir is the director of the FAMU s Candidate Empowerment Center.
The partnership also follows in the wake of the FAMU football team adopting Bond Elementary School.
