Insults Fly in Afghan Parliament Security Debate
A parliament discussion on the security of the Kabul-Kandahar highway flared up after MP Kamal Nasir Osuli took the government’s side and said the security of the key highway is better than when the country was in civil war.
“The values that a republic government should have do not exist in this republic,” said Khan Agha Rezaee, head of the security committee of the parliament.
“The current republic, over the last 20 years, is better than 1992. People were killed in Kabul in 1993 and in 1994, people got married with boys on the Kabul-Kandahar Highway,” said Kamal Nasir Osuli, an MP from Khost.
MPs React to Rahmani Remarks on Interim Setup
The Wolesi Jirga Speaker Mir Rahmani’s remarks on an interim government plan stoked debate in Monday’s session as some MPs said such a plan is against the law and that the Republic must be maintained.
Addressing an event on Sunday, Rahmani said he has found access to the draft of an interim setup and he welcomes it, but he added that the plan needs to be comprehensive.
“The plan, which is said to have been prepared by the United States and the Taliban for establishing an interim government or a proposed peace, has reached us,” the parliament speaker said. “We welcome it because it has mentioned staying with the current system and the national assembly, but it has many problems that need discussion.”
MPs Seek Meeting with Ghani to Discuss Budget
A group of lawmakers has sought a meeting with President Ashraf Ghani to find a solution to the budget plan dispute that has been ongoing for a month now. The budget has been rejected by the parliament two times for various reasons, mainly a Afs15 billion ($ 193.8 million) increase in the ordinary budget for the current fiscal year.
The current fiscal year started on December 21, but so far, the budget for fiscal year 1400 has not been approved.
The financial and budget committee of the Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, said that, based on the budget plan, the government is removing 13,000 public servants, but it has increased the ordinary budget from which the salaries of government employees are paid.
