The City of Kalona is offering residents a chance to get rid of unwanted items this May. A citywide cleanup day is scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd from 8-11a.m. This is a reduced price program and the price per load will be determined by arrival. Items that will be accepted include glass, plastics, scrap metal, holiday lights, bicycles, small camping grills, mattresses, box spring, furniture, and appliances. Items that will not be accepted include yard waste, cardboard, computer monitors, televisions, tires, oil, shingles, building materials, railroad ties, asbestos, light bulbs, hazardous materials, and lead acid batteries. Residents may bring items to the west parking lot of Kalona City Park and payment can be made by cash or check. Contact Kalona City Hall at 319-656-2310 for more information.
The City of Kalona will present their application later this month for projects utilizing Washington County Riverboat Foundation (WCRF) funds in the next fiscal year.
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh says they have until January 22nd to submit their plans on how they will use about $140,000 in WCRF municipal funds. He says two park projects top their list, “We are looking to do an all-inclusive playground in our Kalona City Park that would be designed to ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) standards and be inclusive and usable for those that might be in a wheelchair, for example. We would like to build a small playground area that would be inclusive for that. And we have a dog park and frisbee golf (course) out at Southtown that we would like to start.”
