KEA Kids News is in the passenger’s seat and out on the track to meet 19-year-old Kaleb Ngatoa, a young race driver with a need for speed. Ngatoa is the first Kiwi driver to win a race at the S5000 series in Melbourne and he did so on debut – his first time out.

KEA Kids News meets competitive siblings Grayson, Tyleah and Hunter Po’e Tofaono who are the country’s first Pasifika chess champions. The chess champs now show other kids how to play. Their coach and maths teacher dad reckons teaching it is the best way to deepen their understanding of the complex board game.

Also on the line, aside from the series title, were the Denny Hulme and Dan Higgins memorial trophies. On last Saturday morning s first race, over 22 laps, Ngatoa, 19, started from the front row and held on to second place. It was a similar story in the 27-lap race two, as Ngatoa started and finished in third.

Ngatoa had an impressive first season in the Toyota Racing Series Unhappy with the direction of the car setup, Ngatoa made dramatic changes overnight for one final shot at a pair of race wins to challenge for the championship. The changes did not help and Ngatoa finished in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the final two races, still high enough to secure him second in the championship, well clear of the third-placed driver.
