Kalamazoo encampment won’t be counted in HUD’s annual homeless survey Updated Jan 28, 2021; Facebook Share KALAMAZOO, MI During the annual count of homeless in Kalamazoo County this week, residents who are sleeping outdoors in below-freezing temperatures were not among those counted. The 2021 count occurred on Wednesday, Jan. 27. In Kalamazoo County, this year’s data will be a sum of those in shelters that night, and will not account for the nearly 200 individuals estimated to be living outdoors in various encampments. A woman named Janice, who spoke with MLive on Wednesday, is among those staying in one of Kalamazoo’s outdoor encampments. She has lived at the encampment for about a month and a half, and is relying on donations for basic necessities.
