People’s Party (PP) says it will do everything possible to retain Zomba Changalume Parliamentary seat, which fell vacant following the death of John Chikalimba, who was the party’s Chief Whip in Parliament while Malawi Congress Party (MCP) says its management team will decide this week how it feature candidates in the forthcoming by-elections.
Kalaile: PP to battle it out in Zomba Changalume to retain the seat
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) will hold by-elections in seven constituencies across the country on the March 30 this year.
Other constituencies that fell vacant due to death are Ntchisi North, Lilongwe Nsinja South and Karonga North while seats in Nsanje Central, Nsanje North and Chikwawa East fell vacant after the High Court nullified results for the 2019 Parliamentary election.

A member of Joyce Banda family Elis Kumpukwe has succumbed to Covid-19 at Zomba Central Hospital where he was receiving treatment.
Mr Elis Kumpukwe was a husband to Joyce Banda’s sister Mrs Cecelia Kumpukwe.
Announcing the news, Peoples Party publicist Ackson Kalaile Banda said the party regrets the death of Honourable Kumpukwe who at the time of his demise was Director of International Affairs in the party.
“Late Kumpukwe will be remembered for his commitment and zeal towards the philosophy of the party right from its inception a decade ago.
“As a party we are deeply aggrieved at the loss which comes a day after we lost another national executive member, late Hon John Chikalimba. Peoples Party sends deepest condolences to the Kumpukwe family for the loss of their loved one,” he said.

Peoples Party regrets to announce the passing of its Leader in Parliament, Honorable John Chikalimba MP, who until his demise was member of Parliament for Zomba Changalume constituency.
Late Hon. Chikalimba passed on today, 27th January 2021 at Zomba Central Hospital.
Led by Party President, Her Excellency Dr. Joyce Banda, the party is deeply saddened for losing an eminent politician whose contribution transcended his constituency and the party but was felt nationally.

Late Hon Chikalimba played a nation building role for many years especially at national political stage where he demonstrated mature leadership both in Parliament and interparty level.
