One of the stalwarts of the Kaitaia Fire Brigade, Grant Baker, was honoured for 25 years service with a Gold Star on Saturday night.
The station was packed with fellow firefighters and guests when he received the brigade s 25th Gold Star - the first, No1480, was awarded in October 1963; his was No8910.

Tamariki Day packed with events
Hundreds of kids are expected at a free Tamariki Day in Russell on Saturday featuring a bevy of Disney princesses, a top kapa haka group, bouncy castles and much more. The event will run from 10am-3pm in the grounds of Pompallier Mission on the Russell waterfront. Acting property lead Kirsty Hofstetter said the event, now in its second year, had been scheduled for March but was postponed due to Covid-19 alert level changes. Northland fans of UK rock legends Queen are in for a treat when Queen: It s a Kinda Magic, celebrating the legacy of Queen and Freddie Mercury, perform in the region.
