Nineteen-year-old Kaelah Marlow died on Thursday after reports she had been injured in the water.
An Australian newspaper is reporting Marlow grew up in Western Australia and had lived in New Zealand for the past five years.
It is understood she was dragged from the water alive but died from her injuries on the beach.
If confirmed as a shark attack, Marlow would be the first shark fatality nationally since 2013.
A post-mortem was carried out yesterday, but it is yet to be confirmed whether a shark was behind the attack.

A beachgoer has described the traumatic scenes at Bowentown Beach as surf lifeguards tried valiantly to save a woman who died from wounds suffered in a shark attack.
Police last night named the victim as Kaelah Marlow, 19, from Hamilton.
Marlow moved to New Zealand five years ago with her parents, Robert and Michelle, and 17-year-old sister Georgia, her aunt Kylie French told the West Australian.

Police have named the young woman who died after a suspected shark attack at Waihi Beach.
She was 19-year-old Kaelah Marlow from Hamilton. Police extend our deepest sympathies to Kaelah s family and loved ones at this very difficult time.
Emergency services rushed to Bowentown beach just after 5pm yesterday. It is understood the teenager was dragged from the water and died from her injuries.
Local man Robert Long said the incident had rocked the Bay of Plenty community.
Long said he went to the beach to lay some flowers and have a beer as a tribute to Marlow.

Kaelah Marlow, 19, suffered bites to one of her legs when she was attacked while swimming in New Zealand but paramedics were unable to save her.

Kaelah was reportedly dragged from the water alive after the attack.
Paramedics administered CPR to the woman on Waihī Beach, in New Zealand’s Bay of Plenty, to no avail.
Local police said her injuries indicated she had been bitten by a shark, with bite wounds to at least one of her legs.
