Nigerian wrestling sensation, Odunayo Adekuoroye has suffered a shocking defeat and will not compete for a medal in the Women’s Freestyle 57kg category at the Tokyo Olympics.
In a swift turn of events, with just a minute of fight time remaining, second seed Adekuoroye lost 8-2 via pinfall to Mongolia’s Anastasia Nichita despite leading the bout 8-0 in the round of 16.
The African champion was in total control, suddenly, Nichita found a way to bring her down and pinned her till the referee declared it over. Stunning victory for the Mongolian. Adekuoroye’s hopes to compete for bronze through the repechage was dashed when Nichita lost 6-3 to Bulgaria’s Georgieva Nikolova in the quarter-finals.

Wrestling federation ponders foreign coach ahead of Olympics The Punch
Published 4:31 am
President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Daniel Igali, says the federation is considering hiring a foreign coach to help the qualified wrestlers to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan get adequate preparations for the Games.
A total of five wrestlers: Odunayo Adekuoroye, Blessing Oborududu, Aminat Adeniyi, Adijat Idris and Ekerekeme Agiomor have all qualified in the men and women’s wrestling events of the rescheduled Games billed for July 24 to August 8.
Igali said, “I will be having some discussions with the sports minister, there are a few things I saw that we can improve on. I may likely bring in someone (foreign coach) to support the team, even if it is for just six weeks, before the Olympics. I already have someone in mind. A coach that will come and bolster the team and work on some deficiencies that I have noticed in the athletes.
