10 March 2021 SALINA Public safety agencies are one of the fastest-growing adopters of unmanned aircraft systems technology. Utilizing UAS provides opportunities and advantages to law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency management personnel, but knowing where to start in developing a UAS operation can be complicated. Kansas State Polytechnic is offering a free webinar and live question and answer session from noon to 1 p.m. CDT Thursday, April 15, to provide guidance to public safety and emergency management organizations on how to start a UAS operation. The free webinar will cover identifying a need, budgeting, technology decisions, training and legal considerations. Law enforcement officials currently managing a UAS operation will also join the webinar to discuss lessons learned, including how to gain leadership and community buy-in, and identifying funding sources. Kansas State Polytechnic UAS experts will be available to answer questions.

Free webinar on UAS regulation changes hosted by K-State Polytechnic; here is what you need to know

These regulation changes are important for every new and experienced UAS pilot to understand. Community members can join the Kansas State Polytechnic UAS experts from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, to learn more and ask questions. The webinar is free but registration is required. The updates to the federal regulations primarily cover remote identification of unmanned aircraft, operations over people, operations at night and requirements for recurrent training for remote pilots. The webinar s primary focus will be on the immediate changes that will affect remote pilots starting in March. Kansas State Polytechnic is recognized by the FAA as an expert in the UAS industry and has been part of numerous research projects advising rules and regulations. K-State Polytechnic provides numerous UAS training opportunities in addition to two nationally ranked UAS bachelor s degrees.

K-State Poly launches fire and hazmat training course The Salina Journal Kansas State University Polytechnic announced it will offer a training course on unmanned aircraft systems for firefighters and hazardous materials personnel. The four-day course will use K-State’s UAS technology, with the first course being Oct. 5-8 at Crisis City Training Center southwest of Salina. Working with Salina-area firefighters and our partners at Crisis City Training Center, we have created a course that offers a one-of-a-kind UAS training in which we can train students on fire, hazmat, and search and research scenarios, said Kenton Dreiling, assistant UAS flight operations manager at K-State Polytechnic. Students who take this course will understand how to best use an unmanned aircraft in a fire or hazmat situation with the overall mission to protect and save lives.
