CASPER, Wyo. Nine Wyoming rest areas which were closed in June 2020 as a cost-saving measure will re-open ahead of Memorial Day weekend, the Wyoming Office of Tourism said on Thursday.
Governor Mark Gordon has directed the Wyoming Department of Transportation and the Wyoming Office of Tourism to temporarily re-open the following rest areas for at least the duration of the 2021 tourist season:
Lusk on US 18
Sundance on I-25
Chugwater on I-25
“With the summer season just around the corner, I’m glad we will be able to reopen these facilities to travelers,” Gordon said in the announcement. “We are glad to have this chance to find a temporary solution.”

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Governor Mark Gordon is making summer travel a little easier during this upcoming summer season.
He has directed the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) and Wyoming Office of Tourism (WOT) to partner to temporarily reopen and operate nine previously closed rest areas for at least the duration of the 2021 tourist season.
In the announcement, Governor Gordon was quoted as saying “With the summer season just around the corner, I’m glad we will be able to reopen these facilities to travelers.”

WYDOT and WOT along with the Governor’s office will work together to secure a temporary federal funding source to allow the nine rest areas throughout the state to reopen.

According to the press release, WYDOT and WOT, along with the Governor s office, will work together to secure a temporary federal funding source to allow the nine rest areas throughout the state to reopen.
Michael Pearlman, Communications Director for the governor s office, said they are unsure at the moment as to where the funding will come from, but they are hopeful that they will be able to get funding from the American Rescue Plan.
