The South Shore Line s Double Track project received its final funding commitment Thursday when the Federal Transit Administration entered an agreement to provide $173 million of the project s $491 million cost.
The federal New Starts grant will help fund a project that will add a second set of tracks along approximately 17 miles of single-track railroad between Gary and Michigan City, and include bridge replacements and station upgrades along the route.
Completion of a full-funding grant agreement for the grant was announced by Gov. Eric Holcomb s office, as well as the FTA and NICTD.Â
âBy improving commuter rail through the Region, the project is a game changer for northwest Indiana and the entire state,â Holcomb said.
