One composer wants to write an opera based on family history, telling the story of her Korean great-aunt who went on a fatal hunger strike rather than be coerced into an arranged marriage. Other creative plans include a mythic treatment of ancient Egyptian gods, a magic-realist opus about an orphanage for fire victims and a black comedy about the misdeeds of “Florida Man” during the 2000 presidential recount.
