CHENNAI: The Southern Bench of the National Green Tribunal has directed various government bodies of Tamil Nadu to file a report on action taken over the violation of biomedical waste disposal norms.
Taking cognisance of a report in
The New Indian Express titled
Biomedical waste dumped near Chennai s Thiruneermalai Lake not removed even after a week, the NGT questioned the government bodies on why no action has been taken despite repeated instances of open dumping and directed them to file a report by March 23.
In the report on January 23, Express had highlighted that Tiruneermalai lake is a rich water resource for the local farmers and due to industrial pollution and the recent bio-medical waste pollution, the water quality was getting degraded. This had affected the local people living there.
NGT Bench asks KRMB to file response before next hearing on February 24
The Southern Zone Bench of National Green Tribunal (NGT) has made it clear that Andhra Pradesh is not entitled to proceed with the Rayalaseema Lift Scheme (RLS) project against the directions issued by it in October last.
During the virtual hearing on Tuesday on a petition filed by one Gavinolla Srinivas of Narayanpet district in December last alleging that the AP government has been carrying out work, in violation of the tribunal order given October 29 asking AP not to take up any work pertaining to the project without getting the project appraised by the statutory authority, the NGT Bench also observed that the request for an adjournment by the counsel for AP could be granted, but not for a longer date.

The Southern Zone Bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has postponed the hearing on an application alleging violation of its order on the Rayalaseema Lift Scheme (RLS) by Andhra Pradesh to February 16.
The application filed by one Gavinolla Srinivas stated that the AP government had been violating the NGT order by taking up earth work related to Rayalaseema Lift Scheme planned to draw over 3 tmc ft of water a day from Srisailam reservoir by executing a lift scheme at Sangameshwaram on the foreshores of joint water storage facility of AP and Telangana.
