Minority Leader Unhappy With President Akufo-Addo

  The Minority Leader and MP for Tamale South, Hon Haruna Iddrisu has urged President Nana Akufo Addo to comply with Article 89 ( 2 ) of the Constitution which enjoins the President to appoint some qualified category of persons to the Council of State in consultation with Parliament. These include one person who has served as Chief Justice, one person who has once served as Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, and one person who has once served as Inspector General of Police, according to article 89 ( 2) of the Constitution. Hon Haruna Iddrisu is unhappy that sometimes such appointments are made by the President and published by the media without the knowledge of Parliament and said such practice must stop.

President Akufo-Addo names Council of State members

705 President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has appointed 11 people to serve on the Council of State for his second term in office. Also, he has named four members to serve as ex officio members of the Council of State. A statement from the Presidency, signed by the Director of Communications, Mr Eugene Arhin, said the appointments were pursuant to Article 89(2) of the 1992 Constitution, while the four ex officio members were named after consultations with Parliament. Appointees The President’s appointees are Nana Otuo Siriboe II, the Juabenhene; Archbishop Justice Ofei Akrofi, Mr Sam Okudzeto, Alhaji Sule Yiremiah and Mr Stanley Adjiri Blankson.

Press focuses on Ghana’s high public debt stock, others Ghana-Press-Review February 02, 2021 to 10:37 476 APA – Accra (Ghana) The increase in public debt stock and the appointment of 11 people by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to serve on the Council of State for his second term in office are some of the trending stories in the Ghanaian press on Tuesday. The Graphic reports that Ghana’s public debt stock peaked in December last year after increased debt accumulation to plug revenue shortfalls and finance a larger fiscal deficit expanded the amount that the country owes to domestic and external creditors. The Bank of Ghana (BoG) data released on January 29 showed that the debt stock ended the year at GH¢286.9 billion, the highest since the bank started releasing data on how much the country owes.

Bagbin chides Akufo-Addo, Your Office got it wrong for not notifying me first, consulting Parliament on Council of State list

LISTEN 2 Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, has chastised the Office of the President for failing to communicate three particular names on his recently-released list of Council of State nominees to his office first, as part of the constitutional requirement to consult Parliament on such, before publication in the media of those nominees. On Monday, 1 February 2021, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, pursuant to Article 89(2) of the Constitution, appointed eleven people to form the Council of State. They include: Nana Otuo Siriboe II, Juabenhene; Archbishop Justice Ofei Akrofi, Mr Sam Okudzeto, Mr Stanley Blankson, Prof. Ato Essuman, Alhaji Aminu Amadu, Dr Margaret Amoakohene, Mrs Georgina Kusi, Mrs Alberta Cudjoe, Kuoro Richard Babini Kanton VI, and Alhaji Sule Yiremiah.
