Published February 15, 2021, 5:44 PM The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has extended to Feb. 26 the deadline for the applications or nominations to the post of Chief Justice which would be vacant on March 27 with the early retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado M. Guevarra, an ex-officio JBC member, said the submission online or physical of the documentary requirements for those who applied or who were nominated would have to be completed on or before Feb. 26. It was not known why the original Feb. 15 deadline was extended. Under the rules, the five most senior SC justices are automatically nominated to the post of Chief Justice.  However, once nominated they have to accept their nominations.

Peralta: Judiciary reforms, programs to continue despite early retirement

Peralta (FACEBOOK / FILE PHOTO / MANILA BULLETIN) Peralta said that all the programs and initiatives “and all the previous ones…are all envisioned to serve as long-term reforms for the Judiciary.” Among the reforms undertaken by the SC at the start of Peralta’s term in late 2019 were the revisions of several rules of procedures and the creation of investigative bodies to probe on erring Judiciary members and court personnel. Remedial measures adopted to contain the pandemic were the online filing of cases and pleadings in courts, conduct of video conferencing to expedite hearing of cases, and the adoption of skeletal force and the four-day workweek in the courts.

JBC opens applications, recommendations to Chief Justice post

Published January 14, 2021, 9:44 AM The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) is now accepting applications or recommendations to the post of Chief Justice and head of the country’s judiciary, which will be vacant on March 27 with the early retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado M. Peralta, until February 15. In an announcement made by the JBC and published in the Manila Bulletin, also open for applications or nominations is the post of Deputy Ombudsman for Mindanao Rodolfo M. Elman whose term of office will end on March 13. For the Deputy Ombudsman’s post, the deadline for applications or recommendations is on March 1. The JBC is the constitutional office that accepts, screens, and nominates appointments to the judiciary, the Ombudsman, and deputy Ombudsman, among other offices.
