When it became apparent that Anne Kananu Mwenda would be the next big thing in Nairobi, the internet was lit trying to find her origins.
Her mother, a retired nurse, sought to set the record straight.
Esther Gakii Mwenda, 72, and Kananu’s relatives describe her as a child of many counties. Born in Mombasa, she grew up in Embu where she is also married but widowed. Her father was from Tharaka Nithi and her mother from Meru.

Anne Kananu Mwenda was yesterday sworn into office as the Nairobi County deputy governor, on a day punctuated by many firsts.
In about six hours, Kananu was quickly elevated from position of chief officer in charge of Disaster Management and Compliance to the city’s second in command by the afternoon, perhaps making her among the first holders of the position to be vetted and sworn into office on the same day.
Having scored her first victory at about 8am when the High Court dismissed two petitions seeking to block her vetting, Kananu strode into the County Assembly plenary chambers at 9am, ready to face the panel that would set the process in motion about 10 minutes later.

It had all the hallmarks of well-oiled machinery and the attendant efficiency.
Anne Kananu walked into the Nairobi County Assembly chambers as an ordinary citizen and walked out as deputy governor.
Questions have been raised on the constitutionality of her swearing in for the job.
Kananu, speaking after her swearing in at KICC, thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta and the Jubilee Party for the change in her circumstances and promised to work with the county assembly.

She also thanked impeached Governor Mike Sonko for having had shown confidence in her by nominating her as his Deputy. Sonko has since recanted the nomination and the man who had challenged it in court, Peter Agoro, withdrawn the matter after which activist Okiya Omtatah filled it afresh only to lose this morning paving way for Kananu s vetting, approval and subsequent swearing in.
