Apo Six: FG yet to pay burial expenses 15 Years after, lawyer tells NHRC panel

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr. Amobi Nzelu on Wednesday pleaded with the Independent Investigative Panel on the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SARS), to revisit the case of Apo six where young traders were alleged to have been extra-judicially killed by some police officer on the 8th of June 2005, and get the Federal government to pay their families, burial expenses.
Nzelu, counsel to the complainants, (Mr. Elvis Ozor and Edwin Meniru) on behalf of Ifeanyi Ozor and five other (now deceased) informed the IIP-SARS Panel, that the order of the then panel led by Justice Olasunbo Goodluck which directed that N500, 000 naira be paid to each of the deceased family for burial expenses was yet to be obeyed by the federal government.
“So, it’s important we delve into the other aspect of the economy to offer our expertise.
“There are two ways to give out our expertise: one as quantity surveyors, what kind of role can we play in agriculture or development of agricultural infrastructure and what role can we play in mining both surface and subsurface.
“Two, as entrepreneurs also, can we invest in agriculture? Can we invest in mining? These are the challenges we want to throw to our colleagues,” he said.
Aliyu said the board targeted the involvement of more young surveyors and the application of artificial intelligence and automation “to ensure that it’s rooted in the profession.

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, dismissed the objection raised by the National Judicial Council (NJC) against the hearing of a suit filed by Justice Rita Ofili Ajumogobia challenging her dismissal from service.
The NJC had, in 2018 dismissed Justice Ajumogobia of the Federal High Court from the service of the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) on the ground of alleged gross judicial misconduct.
Dissatisfied with the action of the NJC, Justice Ajumogobia, approached the Federal High Court, Abuja with a suit challenging the process adopted by the fact-finding committee of the NJC that led to her dismissal.
The judge prayed the court to declare as illegal, unconstitutional, null and void the report of the fact-finding committee that recommended her dismissal.
The National Judicial Council (NJC) on Tuesday failed to stop the hearing of a suit filed against it by a dismissed Judge, Justice Rita Ajumogobia, over her dismissal at the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.
