Court of Appeal upholds decision in favour of cameraman hurt in 2016 Penang Bridge shooting

PETALING JAYA: The Court of Appeal upheld an earlier decision in favour of RTM cameraman Mohamad Amirul Amin Mohamed, granting him RM114,470 in compensation for being injured in a shooting at the Penang Bridge. The panel of three dismissed the appeal by security company GMP Kaisar Security Sdn Bhd, whose then employee Ja’afar Halid shot Amirul and seven others at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on Dec 1,2016. Delivering their decision virtually via a Zoom meeting, they also ordered GMP Kaisar Security to pay Amirul RM10,000 in costs. Court of Appeal Justices Lau Bee Lan and Abu Bakar Jais, in a majority decision, ruled that the appeal had no merit and that the Penang High Court judge, Justice Hadhariah Syed Ismail, had directed herself correctly on facts and law.
